Writers must know the subjects they are writing about very well.
We need to share with the white sheet our personal story. We are sure that we know nothing better than our own life, we know no one better than we know ourselves. There is no need to read a huge amount of information about the topic we are going to write about. All the necessary information is locked in our head.
All that remains is to find time to sit down in front of the white sheet and start writing. We will find time if we limit our social contacts. There isn't much use for them. Often they are an irrational waste of time because in the end, we always remain alone and misunderstood.
However, do we know ourselves and our loved ones as well as we think? This we will find out in the process of writing. That is the point of writing a novel about ourselves.
Each person is an unexplored universe. A novel can be written about any person. If the writer is as frank as possible when telling his story, he will arrive at previously unsuspected discoveries about himself, about other people, about the causes of the events he witnessed. Thus, the novel will be an authentic document of what happened in those times it tells about.
Psychologists recommend writing as a means of healing mental traumas, to smooth out unconscious internal conflicts of the personality, caused by prejudices or complex experiences in childhood. Writing leads to the discovery of cause - and - effect relationships, determining events from our personal life, to a reduction of the internal tension of the personality, to a spiritual catharsis. Writing leads to personal grouth, frees us from accumulated negative energy, helps us get to know ourselves, and thus outlines the path to our happiness.
I didn't think about all this when I sat down to write my first novel / Apocryphal Love/. I just felt the need to sit down to describe my story because there was something about it that I didn't understand. I only realized all of the above about the role of writing when the novel was written. After reading it several times, I made unexpected discoveries about my character and how it determined the development and outcome of certain events in my life.
The same thing happened after I wrote the novel Let the Road Embrace Me.
I write because I need to write. I describe the events as I need to describe them to free myself from thoughts that do not give me peace, to find answers to my questions.
Is it easy to write like that? I think, it's easier to write a scientific work because you don't put feelings into it. In a scientific work the difficulty is in the research, not the writing. In my opinion, the most difficult work for a writer is to describe feelings, to successfully convey the fillings of his characters.
If we want to build our plot on a personal story, we should try to be as candid as possible when we start filling the white sheet with a narrative of our memories and experiences. We must write with the thought that no one will read what is written. Then we will decide whether to publish it and whether to make the truth decently dressed and more acceptable. After all, why wouldn't anyone read it? We couldn't have described anything that couldn't hapen to every person. This means that what is written may be useful for someone else, not just for ourselves.
You will find a lot of information on the internet about the writing, editing and publishing process. Here I just want to say that this process will not be easy if you are not a professional writer.
I wrote my first novel, Apocryphal Love, when I was 41 years old. Immediatly after writing it, I self-published it and printed it in a small print run. This first edition of the novel was in serious need of editing. After that first edition, the novel went through countless revisions made by myself. The last revision was in 2019, when I was 65 years old.
Day after day, the days fly by. Years, centuries fly by. Everything disappears into infinity. Oblivion will cover all our deeds. Some colossal natural disaster will wipe out even the greatest human achievements. How insignificant against this background are all our petty everyday quarrels, ambitions, struggles for supremacy, with which our social life is inevitably connected.
Sometimes it is worth being alone with ourselves for a certain time, to delve a little into our inner world, to stop the flight of time on a piece of paper.
Our works will outlive us a little. No mater how insignificant they are, they will tell about the time in wich we lived.
